Moodle is about social constructivism, where learners gain a deeper understanding of the subject area through individual learning and collaborative sharing by discussing, debating, bouncing ideas amongst a group of fellow learners, during a time that suits them.

Using Moodle,(the standard online suite as used by further education colleges and universities) the open source course management system, create and manage online courses and allow users to enroll and study online at any time.

Moodle is a course management system designed to help educators create quality online courses. Available in 34 languages and features a WYSIWYG HTML editor. The teacher has full control over all settings for a course. There is a flexible array of course activities (Forums, Journals, Quizzes, Resources, Choices, Surveys, Assignments, Chats, Workshops), user logging and tracking, mail integration and much more.

 

Features of Moodle

  • Assignments
    Grade electronically submitted material or 'offline' submissions such as paper-based assignments or class presentations.

  • Chat
    Allow participants to have a real-time discussion with each other and/or tutors via the web. This is a useful way to get a different understanding of each other and the topic being discussed.

  • Forums
    Allow students to use a forum to discuss courses, material and knowledge and allow tutors to provide support and mentoring.

  • Glossaries
    Create and maintain a list of definitions, like a dictionary. The entries can be searched or browsed in many different formats.

  • Multiple Choice
    Create multiple-choice question and answers

  • Lessons
    Deliver content in an interesting and flexible way. They consist of a number of pages, with each page normally ends with a multiple choice question.

  • Quizzes
    Design and set quiz tests, consisting of multiple choice, true-false, and short answer questions and more. Each attempt is automatically marked, and the teacher/ tutor can choose whether to give feedback or to show correct answers.

  • Resources
    Resources can be prepared files uploaded to the course server
    ; pages edited directly in Moodle; or external web pages made to appear part of this course.

  • SCORM Packages
    SCORM is a collection of specifications that enable interoperability, accessibility and reusability of web-based learning content.

  • Surveys
    The Survey module provides a number of verified survey instruments that have been found useful in assessing and stimulating learning in online environments.

  • Polls
    Ask questions with multiple choice answers to stimulate thinking about a topic; to allow the class to vote on a direction for the course; or to gather research consent.

  • Wiki
    A wiki is a web page that anyone can add to or edit. It enables documents to be authored collectively and supports collaborative learning. Old versions are not deleted and may be restored if required.

  • Workshops
    A Workshop is a peer assessment activity with a huge array of options. It allows participants to assess each other's projects, as well as exemplar projects, in a number of ways.

  • Upload files
    Upload additional resources such as PDF documents, presentations, spreadsheets and text documents.
